Sacramento County covers about 994 square miles in the middle of the California Central Valley, a large agricultural region. It extends from the low delta lands between the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River north to about ten miles beyond the State Capitol and east to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The southmost portion of Sacramento County has direct access to San Francisco Bay. The City of Scarmento is the state capital of California. It is also the core cultural and economic engine of a four-county metropolitan area exceeding 2.1 million residents (El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties).
Affectionately known as the "River City", two major rivers intersect in the City of Sacramento; the American and the Sacramento. Both rivers are international attractions for rafters, kayakers and boaters. Running along a 23-mile stretch of the American River is the tree-lined American River Parkway where joggers, walkers and cyclists can enjoy one of the regions’ many natural attractions. Even 150 years after the famous California "Gold Rush," visitors are still discovering gold in Sacramento. In the decades since fortune hunters flocked to the region in search of the glimmering metal, Sacramento, California, has emerged into a cosmopolitan state capital that still retains its unique Gold Rush history.Today you can find gold here without pans or mining equipment. It's in the area's family-friendly attractions, museums, and parks and gardens. It's there for the taking at four-star restaurants and first-class hotels. It's in every seat in the house for Broadway musicals and local plays.
And best of all, you can afford it! Sacramento is one of the best visitor values in California with well-priced hotel rooms and lots to do for little or no cost like free tours of the California State Capitol building or sightseeing in historic Old Sacramento.
